
To delete other partitions, select them during the installation process, and remove them just as you did with the primary Windows system partition. If you are reinstalling XP because of a corrupt installation due to viruses or malware, deleting all partitions and reformatting them with the Windows XP setup utility may help you prevent further infections. While you do not have to delete all the partitions on the hard drive to reinstall Windows XP, it may be prudent in some situations. Select the CD or optical drive as the primary boot device, and press "F10" or click "Save Settings and Exit." After the computer restarts automatically, it should prompt you to boot from the Windows XP installation disc. After the BIOS menu displays, click or select the "Boot," "Boot Options" or other similarly named menu option. To access the BIOS, press "Delete," "F1" or "F2" on startup, and enter the system password if prompted. If the boot screen does not display a message prompting you to boot from the CD, you may need to reconfigure your BIOS boot settings before reinstalling Windows XP. Nevertheless, if you want to back up applications, save the setup or installation files only, and do not try to copy the entire installed application.
You need not back up any programs on the computer unless they are ones you downloaded or others for which you don’t have installation media.
